Sherman Alexie is a writer, using his childhood experiences on the Spokane Indian Reservation to write several books and a screenplay about life on a reservation. His books have won several awards including the 2007 U.S. National Book Award for Young People’s Literature. He was born with hydrocephalus, a condition that causes you to have too much brain fluid. He had to have surgery to remove excess liquid when he was six months old. Despite his father being an alcoholic, their family managed to get by. His mother worked at a trading post, sewing quilts. Wanting to pursue a career in writing, Alexie decided to leave the reservation and attend high school in Reardan, Washington.
